Random team guide

Make teams in three quick steps

This free team generator is built for classrooms, practices, games, workshops, and any moment when you need groups now—not after creating an account.

  1. Add the names

Paste a spreadsheet column or type one person per line.

  2. Choose the team size

Set the number of teams or the number of people on each team.

  3. Generate and share

Reshuffle, copy, or print the finished teams immediately.

How fair team generation works

Random mode uses cryptographically secure browser randomness, keeps team sizes within one person, and randomly chooses which team labels receive an extra person when the split is uneven. Skill-balanced mode first randomizes players with the same rating, places higher-rated players onto the available team with the lowest running skill total, then swaps members when a swap reduces the gap between team totals. Ratings guide the balance but never appear in the displayed teams.

Common questions

Random team generator FAQ

How does the random team generator work?

It securely shuffles your list in the browser, then fills teams as evenly as possible. The largest and smallest teams will never differ by more than one person.

Can I balance teams by skill?

Yes. Turn on skill balancing and add a whole-number rating from 1 to 5 after each name, separated by a comma or a spreadsheet tab. The ratings are used for balancing but hidden from the results.

Are the names saved or uploaded?

Everything runs locally in your browser and names are never uploaded. They are not saved by default. Turn on Remember on this device to keep an on-device copy, or download a local JSON backup.

Can I choose my own team names?

Yes. Open Custom team names and add one name per line. Any team without a custom name will be labeled Team 1, Team 2, and so on.
